Representative Richard Neal of Massachusetts, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, said they will attempt to advance the legislation that would expand healthcare benefits for the elderly and other social services that are part of a $3.5 trillion domestic spending plan. The committee plans to debate its wide-ranging measures in work sessions scheduled for Thursday and Friday.
“Later this week, the Ways and Means Committee will put an end to the idea that only some workers are worthy of ‘perks’ like paid leave, child care, and assistance in saving for retirement, and finally commit to investments that make these supports fixtures of the American workplace,” Representative Neal stated.
But with the economic recovery nearing pre-pandemic levels, there is already talk of reducing the $3.5 trillion price tag. A series of other House panels will be working on their respective portions of the spending package in the coming days in the hopes the House will approve them later this month.
The measure would then go to the Senate, where Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York intends to use a special procedure known as reconciliation that would allow them to pass the legislation by a simple majority vote instead of the 60 votes needed to advance most bills in that chamber. Senator Schumer has said the spending would be offset by tax increases for corporations and the wealthy.
